Information that Tehran has targeted the island of Diego Garcia may have revealed a secret missile program that threatens all of Europe.

The information about the launch of two Iranian missiles towards the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean was considered an unexpected development for the United States and Israel.

Until now, public estimates put the range of Iranian missiles at around 2,000 kilometers. However, recent developments suggest a greater capability, potentially including much more distant targets, including parts of Europe.

Former head of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) air defense, Brigadier General Ran Kochav, was quoted as saying by The Jerusalem Post that Iran has developed two-stage missiles. This technology is commonly used for launching satellites into space as well as medium- and long-range ballistic missiles.

Along the same lines, the current IDF chief also stated that the range expansion is related to the use of multi-stage launch systems.

Israel reportedly managed to shoot down an Iranian missile outside the atmosphere, suggesting it reached very high altitudes and therefore had the potential for long-range action. The interception is believed to have been carried out with the Arrow missile system, designed for high-altitude interceptions, as opposed to the Iron Dome system, which is used for low-altitude threats.

Kochav points out that Iran has been working on such technologies for years, justifying them with space programs for launching satellites. However, both Israel and the US have warned that these programs could have dual civilian and military uses, and could contribute to the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Iran has consistently denied these allegations, but according to published analysis, the latest testing may indicate the existence of an advanced program that has been in development for years.

In terms of technology, Kochav suggests that the missile could be a modified version of the Soviet R-27, originally used by submarines and potentially capable of carrying various warheads. He adds that Iran may have adapted this system for land launch.

Another scenario mentioned is related to a modified variant of the Khorramshahr-4 missile, while comparisons are also made with technologies used by North Korea, which has achieved a range of around 3,000 kilometers with similar systems.

According to Kochav, one way to increase range is to use lighter warheads, reducing weight and increasing the distance traveled with the same energy.

He warns that, if these capabilities are confirmed, cities like London, Paris and Berlin could come within range of Iranian missiles, significantly changing the threat assessment for Europe.

"The Jerusalem Post" also points out that it remains unclear why these developments were not identified earlier by Israeli intelligence services.

In a rare public statement on March 16, an IDF intelligence official announced that Israel had struck an Iranian base linked to the development of anti-satellite technologies. The base was linked to the Chamran-1 satellite program, which was launched in September 2024 with the Qaem-100 rocket, a three-stage solid-fuel system. / Pamphlet
