The French newspaper "Le Monde" has not spared criticism of Matteo Salvini, following the Deputy Prime Minister's comments about French President Emmanuel Macron regarding the deployment of troops in Ukraine.
"In the Italian political landscape, the leader of the far-right League stands out as the main political figure who has maintained the closest ties to the Kremlin. Amid the transatlantic and European diplomatic chaos caused by the rise to power of US President Donald Trump, the leader of the far-right in Italy, Giorgia Meloni, has tried to revive her relationship with Emmanuel Macron, marked by crisis and misunderstandings," writes Le Monde.
Less than three months later, the newspaper adds, "a meeting in Rome with the head of state that was supposed to revive relations and show the goodwill of both sides, his deputy, Matteo Salvini, has added a new point to the long list of diplomatic crises that have aggravated Franco-Italian relations since the nationalist leader came to power in October 2022."
But despite the French newspaper's stance, there is no diplomatic crisis between Italy and France.
The indirect response came from the leader of the League group in the Senate, Massimiliano Romeo: "the sincerity that distinguishes us in the League can sometimes seem harsh, but it has often proven to be the voice of reason. Better to be clear today than to have military chaos tomorrow. Salvini reiterated this clearly: Italy must not retreat from the idea of sending troops to Ukraine".
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that "it is right to emphasize that foreign policy relations are handled by the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister. Our discussions are frequent, so we are moving forward."
"I believe that the strength of ideas is what matters. If you want to achieve results, you have to focus on ideas even when there are differences," Tajani said.
He continued, "we always have the same idea with our European friends, but in my opinion, success is achieved through the strength of ideas and not through the violence of words."
