Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for UN chief Antonio Guterres, stated that the Israeli army is obstructing UNIFIL peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon.
Haq pointed to at least two incidents where the Israeli military has obstructed UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. He stressed that this action is contrary to the obligations set forth for peacekeeping forces.
“In one case, south of the Lebanese city of Biyyada, a tank stopped peacekeepers accompanying the Lebanese Red Cross, pointing its main gun at the convoy and instructing them to leave the area. The convoy was later able to continue on its way. The second incident saw an Israeli tank temporarily block a UNIFIL patrol near Naqoura. Such restrictions are contrary to the obligation to respect UNIFIL’s freedom of movement. We call on all actors to fully respect this obligation,” Haq told reporters.
Haq also told reporters that three deadly bullets fired by the Israeli army fell about 70 meters from a UNIFIL position near Rmeish, a village near the Lebanon-Israel border, on Thursday.
Meanwhile, earlier today, UNIFIL also reported a clash inside and another near a UN position in Biyyada, resulting in material damage to buildings.
