The initiative relating to the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean aims to give President Erdogan the authority to declare exclusive economic zones.

The ruling party in Turkey is preparing a legal initiative that would give President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the authority to declare an Exclusive Economic Zone up to 200 nautical miles, according to Bloomberg.

The draft law, also referred to as the "Blue Homeland" initiative, aims to strengthen Turkish claims over marine resources, including fishing, exploration and drilling rights, as well as environmental issues, including the creation of marine parks.

According to the report, the initiative would also be implemented in disputed waters in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, where Greece and Cyprus have legal claims that overlap with those of Turkey.

The move is seen as a response to the energy plans of Athens and Nicosia. Ankara aims to show that it cannot be excluded from energy developments in the region.

However, the initiative raises important questions about compliance with international law. The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea provides for an EEZ of up to 200 nautical miles, but Turkey has not ratified it. Ankara disputes the position that the islands have their own continental shelf or EEZ beyond territorial waters.

Turkey argues that maritime zones should be defined on the basis of continental territory. It believes that island states, such as Cyprus, should be limited to 12 nautical miles, while the Turkish Cypriot entity in the north of the island also lays claims to the area's natural resources.

The United States supports the continuation of the dialogue, while the European Union has previously warned of sanctions for Turkish drilling activities.

Bloomberg also refers to the Cyprus issue, recalling that the island has remained divided since 1974. Greece calls the Turkish intervention an invasion, while Turkey says the operation was necessary to protect the Turkish Cypriot community after the coup supported by the Athens junta.
