The UN has today called for an investigation into the Israeli airstrike that killed at least 22 people in northern Lebanon. Meanwhile, Pentagon officials announced that US forces and components of the advanced missile defense system that the United States is sending to Israel to protect it from Iran's ballistic missile attacks began arriving in Israel.

United Nations officials on Tuesday called for an investigation into an Israeli airstrike in northern Lebanon that killed at least 22 people.

According to the spokesperson of the UN Human Rights Office in Geneva, Jeremy Laurence, among those killed in the village of Aito were 12 women and 2 children. He said that according to the reports received by this office, the target of the attack was a four-story residential building.

"Taking into account these factors, we have serious concerns regarding the observance of the laws of war and the principles of proportionality", he declared.

Residents and refugees in the village of Aito, who fled the fighting in the south of the country, showed the damage caused by the Israeli attack.

"We lost everything, clothes, savings, personal belongings, jewelry, everything. We found nothing, everything was covered by rubble," says Eli Alwan, a Lebanese displaced person.

The Israeli military announced on Tuesday that its air defense systems intercepted several rockets fired from Lebanon into Israel, which triggered the alarm system at the port of Haifa. Israeli authorities also announced that they have killed dozens of militants in airstrikes against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on Monday that Israel would retaliate against a Hezbollah drone strike that killed four Israeli soldiers and seriously wounded seven others on a military base in the interior of Israel.

"We are fighting a fierce campaign against Iran's axis of evil that seeks to destroy us. They will not be able to do such a thing. We will continue to fight. We are paying a painful price, but we are making incredible achievements – and we will continue to achieve them. I want to make it clear: we will continue to hit Hezbollah mercilessly in all parts of Lebanon and in Beirut," he declared.

Pentagon officials announced on Tuesday that US forces and the Thaad air defense system began arriving in Israel on Monday. This is the United States' most advanced missile defense system. The THAAD system is designed to destroy short-, medium- and long-range ballistic missiles, both in and out of the atmosphere. The missiles of the THAAD system are not filled with explosives, but destroy enemy missiles through contact, colliding with them.

Meanwhile, the American newspapers Washington Post and Wall Street Journal announced that Prime Minister Netanyahu told President Biden during the telephone conversation last week that Israel will only attack military targets in Iran and not nuclear facilities or oil refineries.

In a statement to the media, Mr. Netanyahu's office said that "we listen to the opinions of the United States, but we make our final decisions based on our national interests."
