
A tragedy has been avoided in the Greek rivers in Kalamata. It is learned that a ship carrying 81 immigrants, 48 men, 12 women and 21 minors, was in danger of sinking. The incident, as reported by the coast guard, happened at noon on Sunday. The ship anchored at the Kalamata lighthouse and with the assistance of the passenger boat "PANAGIA THALASSINI".
Also, one of the rescued was transported by ambulance to the General Hospital of Kalamata, after having suffered a fracture of the lower limbs. According to their statement, they had left by boat in the early hours of the morning of 10.09.2024 from an unknown point on the Turkish coast near the city of FETHIYE, bound for Italy. And each immigrant had paid about $8,500 for their transportation.
Meanwhile, the Central Port Authority of Kalamata, which is conducting preliminary investigations, in cooperation with the Maritime Border Security and Protection Directorate (DAPTHAS) have arrested four people as traffickers. They were arrested for "Illegal entry into the country", "Illegal trafficking of foreigners", "Criminal organization" and "Exposure of life in danger".
