The opposition parties in Serbia have appealed to the European Union through a letter sent to the High Representative for Foreign Policy, Mr. Josep Borrell, so that they do not consider President Aleksandar Vucic as an exclusive interlocutor, but as the person with personal and political responsibility for the consequences that Serbia may have after the attack in the north of Kosovo.
The opposition parties in Serbia emphasize in their letter that President Vučić is part of the problem, and not the solution to the current degradation of the entire situation both in Serbia and beyond.
They further emphasize that a democratic government in Serbia is a prerequisite for seeking long-term solutions to complex problems, both in Kosovo and for broader stability and peace in the Western Balkans region.
The opposition emphasizes that the recent events in the village of Banjské in Kosovo have deeply disturbed the citizens of Serbia and that they may have deeper consequences. Furthermore, the Serbian opposition expresses concern about the possibility of imposing measures against Serbia.
The full letter sent to Mr. Josep Borrell:
"Your Excellency, the events in the village of Banjské in the north of Kosovo have deeply disturbed the citizens of Serbia, with potentially wider consequences. The security situation has seriously deteriorated. There is no doubt that the constructive involvement of the international community in Kosovo is needed, including the mediation of the European Union, whose efforts we welcome, but which so far have proved to be insufficient.
Aleksandar Vucic and his government bear a significant part of the political and other responsibility for the events in Banjska.
Condemning any attempt to solve political problems with violence, we also emphasize a large number of violent and unjustified actions against the Serbian population in the north of Kosovo undertaken by the Government of Albin Kurti (e.g. the violent imposition of the head of municipality after elections in which less than 3 percent of the population participated, brutal police behavior, sending special units to the north, groundless arrests, illegal import ban of goods from Serbia, inadequate response to violence against citizens Serbs, especially returnees, etc.).
Violation of human and minority rights, insecurity, daily threats and brutality of the police forces of the Pristina government have already brought about the emigration of the Serbian population from Kosovo.
Leaving aside the motives of Mr. Kurti, we should not close our eyes to the increasingly frequent provocations against the Serbs living in Kosovo and Metohija, which undermine every effort to contribute to the dialogue and peaceful coexistence of the communities.
The Serbian population in Kosovo found itself between, on the one hand, the criminalized and authoritarian "Serb List" and on the other hand the systematic oppression of Albin Kurti. Moreover, Aleksandër Vučič is directly responsible for encouraging Serbian representatives to leave the institutions of Kosovo - especially the police units - but also for imposing authoritarian and undemocratic solutions, that is, for removing political pluralism among the Serbs in Kosovo.
Mr. Vucic is part of the problem, not the solution to the current degradation of the whole situation - both in Serbia and beyond. A democratic government in Serbia is a prerequisite for seeking long-term solutions to complex problems, both in Kosovo and for broader stability and peace in the Western Balkans region. We want to turn Serbia into a partner, not a saboteur of stability.
