Refugee charities have voiced their deep concern and opposition to the suspension of decisions on asylum applications from Syrians in Britain following the fall of the Assad regime.
Urging Home Secretary Yvette Cooper to resume her department's processing of these claims, the organizations said it is not clear Syria is safe for those who have or are seeking asylum.
The Home Office confirmed the temporary suspension of decision-making earlier this week, with Cooper saying that events in Syria led to a very rapid situation which would be monitored.
In their letter, the charities said the Foreign Office had advised against any travel to Syria and had suspended all British embassy services in the country.
" We think this shows the British government's acceptance that Syria is not yet a safe country and therefore asylum applications should not be suspended ," the letter said.
