A federal judge in Florida on Friday dismissed President Donald Trump's defamation lawsuit against the New York Times, seeking $15 billion in damages.
The lawsuit cited a book and an article written by Times reporters Russ Buettner and Susanne Craig that focused on Trump's finances and his pre-presidential role on the television series "The Apprentice."
Trump's lawsuit alleged that they "maliciously spread the fact-free narrative" that television producer Mark Burnett turned Trump into a celebrity, "even though at the time of the publications and before, the defendants knew that President Trump was already a mega-celebrity and a huge business success."
U.S. District Judge Steven Merryday dismissed the lawsuit and gave the president's lawyers 28 days to re-file their lawsuit.
“A complaint is not a public relations megaphone or a podium for an impassioned speech at a political rally or the functional equivalent of Speakers’ Corner in Hyde Park,” Merryday wrote.
Judge Merryday, in a harsh 4-page ruling, said he was dismissing the lawsuit because it "blatantly and inexcusably" violates the rules governing civil lawsuits.
"A complaint is a short, simple, and direct statement of factual allegations, sufficient to establish a seemingly credible claim for relief and sufficient to permit the formulation of an informed response," he wrote.
"Although lawyers have some freedom of expression in defending a client's claim, the complaint in this action extends far beyond the outer limit of that freedom."
Merryday, who was appointed by President George H.W. Bush, said the lawsuit contains eighty pages of repeated allegations and praise for President Trump, but fails to prove two counts of alleged defamation. He sharply criticized Trump's lawyers for the way they drafted the lawsuit, weaving "excessive" praise for Trump's show "The Apprentice," as well as the size of his real estate empire and the "historic fashion" of Trump's presidential victory in 2024.
