Three Russian fighter jets that violated Estonian airspace have been intercepted by NATO, the military alliance said. The Estonian Foreign Ministry in Tallinn condemned the violation as a "brazen" act.

Meanwhile, senior EU diplomat and former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas called the violation "an extremely dangerous provocation."

In a post on the X platform, Kallas said the EU "will continue to support member states in strengthening their defense through European resources," adding that Russian President Vladimir Putin "is testing the resolve of the West. We must not show weakness."

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in a similar post on X, said: “We will respond to any provocation with determination, while further investing in strengthening the EU's eastern flank. As threats grow, so will our pressure.”

Estonian media reports that the Russian planes had their transponders turned off during the air violation.

Last week, Poland's military said it had shot down at least three Russian drones, while Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that a total of 19 drones had entered Polish airspace.
