Pact with Trump, EU comes out with different text than the US: Agreement is not

The "issue" for the EU-US pact continues...

The European Union has released its official version of the agreement reached in Scotland on Sunday with the United States, bringing significant differences from the document distributed earlier by the White House. The Brussels text emphasizes that the pact is not legally binding, while it does not mention any commitment not to impose digital taxes on big tech companies.

The European Commission's spokesperson for Trade said that the EU retains the right to regulate the digital space according to its own rules, emphasizing that the agreement does not prohibit the imposition of new taxes on online services nor tariffs on network usage, as suggested in the American statement.

The EU document also highlights other discrepancies with the American version, particularly regarding tariffs on chips and pharmaceutical products, which according to Brussels are currently not taxed.

The European Commission describes the agreement as a political pact, aiming at stability in EU-US trade relations, but requires further negotiations for practical implementation. “ This agreement protects our strategic interests and our regulatory sovereignty, as well as sensitive sectors such as agriculture, ” the document says.

In parallel to this debate, a group of 11 EU countries has called for the establishment of a new safeguard mechanism for the steel industry, which would include quotas and additional tariffs on imports that exceed market demand. The request comes after a long period of global overcapacity and US protectionist measures, which have significantly reduced European steel production, which has fallen to historically low levels.
