An armed attack on an office building in central New York has left four people dead, including a police officer, after the perpetrator targeted the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL) but took the wrong elevator.

The city's mayor, Eric Adams, confirmed that investigations indicate that the perpetrator had planned a specific attack on the NFL offices, which are located in the same building.

" We have reason to believe that his target was the NFL agency located there ," Adams told MSNBC.

Among the victims was police officer Didarul Islam, 36, a married father of two, and his wife is pregnant. Another serious victim was Wesley LePatner, a managing director at investment firm Blackstone. The company released a statement describing him as “smart, dedicated and respected across the industry.”

Authorities confirmed that the attacker, 27-year-old Tamura, had a documented history of mental health issues and had played college football, but not in the NFL. According to US networks, a letter was found next to his body expressing anger that his mental illness was linked to the sport he once played.

Security camera footage shows Tamura getting out of a black BMW with a rifle in his hand shortly before 6:30 p.m. and immediately shooting Officer Islam. He then shot a woman hiding behind a pillar, continuing to fire indiscriminately as he moved toward the elevators, where he also shot a security guard.

The incident shocked not only the city but also the world of American sports. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said that one of the league employees is in stable condition in hospital after suffering serious injuries.
