Russia-Ukraine pact, hundreds of prisoners exchanged

Russia and Ukraine exchanged 303 prisoners from each side, thus completing the third and final phase of the agreement to release 1,000 prisoners from each side.

"303 Ukrainian fighters are home. The third stage of the 1,000-for-1,000 exchange agreement, reached in Turkey, has been completed. It is certain that we will return all our people from Russian captivity," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in Kiev.

Overnight, Russia targeted Kiev and other Ukrainian regions with a large-scale drone and missile attack, killing at least 12 people, according to local officials.

According to the Ukrainian president, nearly 300 drone strikes and about 70 missiles were launched towards Ukraine. Most of the released Ukrainian soldiers were taken prisoner in the Donetsk region, some of them as early as 2022, the Ukrainian leader said in a separate video address. He added that others were captured in the territories of the Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv and Luhansk regions.

Kiev and Moscow agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners from each side during talks in Istanbul last week. It marks a rare moment of cooperation between the two nations, which have repeatedly failed to reach a ceasefire agreement.
