Former Foreign Minister of Albania, Ditmir Bushati, in the "Opinion" show on TV Klan analyzed developments in the international arena, with a special focus on the impact that global conflicts have on our region and the role that Albania should have in these circumstances.
According to Bushati, the world is experiencing a dynamic phase with major geopolitical changes, where the orientation of small countries must be based on clear and coherent principles. He emphasized that "geography is a destination, we cannot change it, while strategy is our choice", underlining the importance of a measured and sustainable positioning of Albanian foreign policy.
Referring to two of the sharpest conflicts, the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East, Bushati emphasized that both have a direct impact on the security and positioning of our region. According to Bushati, Albania's position after the outbreak of the conflict in Gaza has become unclear and dim, losing the clarity that has characterized Albanian diplomacy in the past.
" It is a world that is constantly changing, has a great dynamic and it is very important that we orient ourselves based on several principles. First, geography is a destination, we cannot change it, while strategy is in our choice. If there are two conflicts that are developing in the world today, that impact our region in one way or another, it is what is happening in the East with Ukraine and what is happening in the Middle East. Secondly, Albania recognized the state of Palestine in '88 and has consistently been a two-state solution. In 2018, it voted against the position proposed by the United States of America to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. We have traditionally cultivated very friendly relations with the state of Israel, especially in the last two decades. Unfortunately, since the outbreak of the conflict in Gaza, Albania's position has become amorphous and unclear ," he said.
In contrast to countries like Germany or Croatia, which have not yet recognized the state of Palestine but hold clear and balanced positions, Bushati noted that Albania has currently chosen a "position of non-alignment."
