
Pope Leo XIV has called for a ceasefire just days before the start of the Winter Olympics in Italy.
Given the numerous armed conflicts around the world, the head of the Catholic Church today called on leaders to "take concrete actions to reduce tensions and seek dialogue."
The 25th Winter Olympic Games begin on Friday, followed by the Paralympic Games. The host cities are Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
Speaking to tens of thousands of believers in St. Peter's Square, Leo described both events as "strong signs of fraternity that inspire hope for a world at peace." He called on politicians to follow suit.
The idea of an Olympic truce, at least a truce during the competitions, dates back to ancient times. However, such calls are rarely heeded.
In 2014, the Winter Olympics were held in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi, shortly before Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea. Russian President Vladimir Putin then ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
