Today begins the era of Pope Leo XIV. On May 18, the new pope's Petrine ministry officially begins, with 156 delegations arriving from all over the world to turn their gaze towards St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
For Italy, President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will be present. The United States will be represented by Vice President JD Vance and Peru by President Dina Boluarte: these are the two nations of which Robert Francis Prevost is a citizen. Ukrainian President Zelensky is also expected.
The celebration, with which the Pope-elect officially begins his ministry, particularly highlights the "Petrine" dimension of the Pastor of the Catholic Church.
As the Office of Liturgical Celebrations explains, this is a very complex liturgy, with moments of particular importance and great symbolic value in which the ancient episcopal signs of the 'comb' stand out: the Pallium and the Fisherman's Ring.
The pallium is a liturgical garment made of lamb's wool. It recalls the Good Shepherd, who places the lost sheep on his shoulders, and Peter's threefold response to the risen Jesus' request to feed his lambs and sheep.
As Simeon of Thessalonica writes in De sacris ordinationibus, “this shows the Savior who, meeting us like lost sheep, carries it on his shoulders and, taking on our human nature in the Incarnation, has deified it, by his death on the cross has offered us to the Father and by his resurrection has exalted us.”
The Fisherman's Ring has the specific value of a signet ring that radically confirms faith, a task entrusted to Peter to confirm his brothers. It is called the "Fisherman's" ring because Peter is the Apostle who, having faith in the words of Jesus, pulled the nets of the miraculously caught fish from the boat onto land.
Program
At 9 a.m., Pope Prevost, as Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni predicted, will visit the square in the popemobile. Entrance to the square for the faithful will be open starting at 6 a.m. The Pope will lead the Regina Coeli on the steps of the Basilica at the end of the Mass. In St. Peter's Basilica, he will then greet the delegations stationed on the right side of the square, as happened for the funeral of Pope Francis, with representatives of Italy, the United States and Peru in the front rows.
Who will be present?
Heads of state and government, ministers and members of the royal family will attend the mass marking the beginning of the pontificate of Leo XIV.
From the United States, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be present. They were accompanied by their wives, Usha Vance and Jeanette Rubio.

Liturgjia
Liturgjia fillon brenda Bazilikës së Vatikanit. Papa Romak zbret, me Patriarkët e Kishave Lindore, te Varri i Shën Pjetrit, ndalet atje në lutje dhe pastaj e temjanon.
Ky moment nënvizon lidhjen e ngushtë të Ipeshkvit të Romës me Apostullin Pjetër dhe martirizimin e tij, pikërisht në vendin ku Vikari i parë i Krishtit rrëfeu besimin e tij me gjakun e tij, së bashku me shumë të krishterë të tjerë që dhanë të njëjtën dëshmi me të.
Dy dhjakë marrin më pas Palliumin, Unazën e Peshkatarit dhe Librin e Ungjijve dhe nisen në procesion drejt Altarit të kremtimit, në parvis, në Sheshin e Shën Pjetrit.
Leo XIV kthehet në parvisin e Badilicës së Shën Pjetrit dhe i bashkohet procesionit, ndërsa këndohet Laudes Regiæ - një këngë litanie - me thirrjen e ndërmjetësimit të Papëve të shenjtë, martirëve dhe shenjtorëve të Kishës Romake.

Në fund të shpalljes së Ungjillit, tre kardinalë të tre urdhrave (dhjakë, presbiterë dhe peshkopë) dhe nga kontinente të ndryshme i afrohen Leonit XIV: i pari i imponon Palliumin, i dyti kërkon, me një lutje të veçantë, praninë dhe ndihmën e Zotit mbi Papën, i treti gjithashtu shqipton një lutje, duke iu lutur Krishtit, "bariut dhe peshkopit të shpirtrave tanë", i cili ndërtoi Kishën mbi shkëmbin e Pjetrit dhe që u njoh nga vetë Pjetri si "Biri i Perëndisë së gjallë", në mënyrë që ai të jetë ai që do t'i japë Papës së ri Unazën e Vulës së Peshkatarit dhe pastaj i jep atij Unazën e Peshkatarit.
Ky moment përfundon duke iu lutur Shpirtit të Shenjtë që ta pasurojë Papën e ri me forcë dhe butësi në ruajtjen e dishepujve të Krishtit në unitetin e bashkësisë, pastaj Papa bekon asamblenë me Librin e Ungjijve, ndërsa ata brohorasin: ''Ad multos annos!''
