Peace in Gaza, Egypt: We are working to convince Hamas to accept Trump's

Egypt is working with Qatar and Turkey to convince Hamas to accept US President Donald Trump's plan to end the nearly two-year war in the Gaza Strip, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said on Thursday.

He said Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist by the US and EU - has been warned that the conflict will escalate if it does not accept Trump's plan.

Speaking at the French Institute for International Relations in Paris, Abdelatty said it is clear that Hamas must disarm and that Israel should not be given any reason to continue its military offensive in Gaza.

"Let's not give any reason to any party to use Hamas as an excuse for these daily and senseless killings of civilians. What is happening is much more than October 7," he said, referring to the Islamist group's 2023 attack on Israel, in which, according to Israeli authorities, 1,200 people were killed and over 200 others were kidnapped.

The Israeli military has killed over 66,000 people during the ensuing war in Gaza, according to Palestinian health authorities.

"This has crossed every line of revenge. This is ethnic cleansing and genocide in progress. So enough is enough," Abdelatty said.

The White House released a 20-point document this week, which calls for an immediate ceasefire, the exchange of hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in phases, the disarmament of Hamas, and the creation of a transitional government led by an international body.

On Tuesday, Trump gave Hamas three to four days to accept the plan.

Egypt is a key mediator in efforts to end the war in Gaza, and Abdelatty said Cairo is working with Qatar and Turkey to convince Hamas to accept the plan.

"If Hamas doesn't accept it, then you know, it will be very difficult. And of course, we will have more escalations. Therefore, we are making great efforts to make this plan workable and to get Hamas' approval," he said.

Abdelatty added that, while he generally supports Trump's proposal for Gaza, more discussions are needed.

" There are many gaps that need to be filled, we need more talks on how to implement, especially on two important issues: governance and security arrangements ," he said.

" We support Trump's plan and vision to end the war and we must move forward ."

When asked if he feared that Trump's plan could lead to forced displacement of Palestinians, he said Egypt would not accept that.

" The displacement will not happen, it will not happen because the displacement will mean the end of the Palestinian issue," he said. "We will not allow this to happen under any circumstances ."/ REL
