Meloni faces the squares: Students, unions and activists challenge the government
After last night's riots across Italy, today has begun with a new wave of protests following the blockade of the Flotilla.
High schools and colleges across the country are on the move: many have been occupied by students, while in others, students have refused to enter classes and have taken to the streets of cities to protest. “ This morning, after the march that blocked Cadorna station in Milan yesterday, we have occupied the State University of Milan ,” declared the communist group “Cambiare Rotta.”
“ Today, in the face of the severity of the events and the widespread anger among students, we decided to follow the call of the Faculty of Literature at Sapienza, which has been occupied, to give a strong signal against any collaboration with genocide and Zionism. September 22 showed us that students and workers, united, can stop war and genocide. Every university will be a barricade ,” the statement says. The only slogan: block everything. Students from high schools and universities have gathered in the main squares of the cities, where marches are also expected to begin.
In Bologna, several university groups have blocked the University Rectorate. There have been clashes in front of the central station, where the police tried to stop students who were trying to block it from entering. Several violent interventions by the police have been reported. In Pisa, the Faculty of Literature has been blocked. In Florence, students have entered the premises of the Faculty of Humanistic Studies. Around 70 protesters who had set off by bicycle from the “Palazzo Nuovo” in Turin reached the outskirts of Sandro Pertini Airport in Caselle, where they cut the nets and entered the perimeter of the runway, but were repelled by the police. The situation is constantly evolving.
Meanwhile, Minister Matteo Salvini intervened again this morning, speaking to Rtl 102.5 radio about the general strike announced for tomorrow by the CGIL and USB unions. “ The right to strike is sacred in a free country like Italy, but it is not right to cause chaos or organize sudden strikes. Strikes without warning, for political reasons, cannot be organized like this ,” he said. Salvini added that the government will take every action allowed by law to guarantee the right to work, study and movement for 60 million Italians.
The Strike Guarantee Commission, meeting today, declared the general strike scheduled for tomorrow, October 3, illegal due to the violation of the legal obligation to give notice provided for by Law 146/90. The official statement states that the call for a strike without prior notice is not justified by Article 2, point 7, which allows immediate strikes only in defense of the constitutional order or in cases of serious danger to the safety of workers. The authority has warned the unions that failure to implement this decision will result in the opening of disciplinary proceedings.
The clash between Meloni and Landini intensified. “ The flotilla has not brought any benefit to the Palestinians ,” declared Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni from Copenhagen, adding: “I expected that the unions, on such an important issue as Gaza, would not strike on Friday. A long weekend does not go with the revolution.” Landini, the general secretary of the CGIL, reacted from “La7”: “The President of the Council must respect those who pay taxes and work. To say that the strike is done to extend the weekend is insulting .” He added that “the values of democracy and the right to peace are at risk. A person who goes on strike gives up his salary, and this shows how important the cause is. In 1943 it was the workers who stopped the war by striking, today they do the same to protect life and humanity.”
Landini concluded with a direct accusation: " I didn't think a prime minister would stoop so low. The strike is an act of conscience, and when the squares are filled with ordinary people reacting to a genocide, then a strong sense of humanity and solidarity arises ."
Meanwhile, Salvini is preparing to present an official briefing at tonight's Council of Ministers meeting, where he will propose changes to the law on strikes, including toughening fines for organizing them without respecting the rules (currently from 2,500 to 50,000 euros). At this sensitive stage, Salvini calls on unions and workers to be responsible and respect the law.
Meanwhile, the CGIL of Lombardy has described the strike of October 3 as an extraordinary manifestation in defense of freedom, peace and international security. 15 manifestations were held throughout the region, with the main one in Milan, from Porta Venezia to the Politecnico, in Piazza “Leonardo da Vinci”. /Adapted from “Il Giornale”
