Vienna Airport has temporarily suspended operations due to heavy snowfall. At least 150 flights have been canceled, according to official airport data. Some departures and landings may not take place until around noon, while delays are expected throughout the day.
About 20 centimeters of snow fell overnight. The winter service has been working non-stop since Thursday evening and has so far removed about 1,000 trucks with approximately 15,000 tons of snow.
The rain also caused significant problems on highways. Authorities temporarily closed a major road on the outskirts of Vienna, while many roads in mountainous areas became impassable.
In the state of Styria, around 30,000 households were left without electricity. According to data from Energienetze Steiermark, a large number of transformer stations went out of service.
Firefighters, police and rescue teams continued their work without interruption. Authorities reported many road accidents and fallen trees on the roads due to the weight of the snow. The precipitation is expected to stop during the day, while a significant increase in temperatures is expected from next week.
