France has called for an "immediate and lasting ceasefire" in the Israel-Hamas war, saying it is very concerned about the situation in Gaza.
The Foreign Minister of France, Catherine Colonna, has said that many civilians are being killed in Gaza.
The Israeli Foreign Minister, Eli Cohen, has said that the ceasefire is a wrong decision, because it serves as a gift to Hamas.
Hamas, the Palestinian group that rules Gaza, has been declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.
Cohen has reiterated that there will be no ceasefire, but has said that France can play a major role in preventing the escalation of regional tensions.
The United Kingdom and Germany have also requested a "durable ceasefire".
Through a joint article, the British Foreign Secretary, David Cameron, and the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, have called for a cessation of hostilities, but only for the long term.
On Tuesday, both countries abstained when the United Nations voted on a resolution on the matter.
"We do not believe that calling for a general ceasefire, with the hope that it will become permanent, is the way forward. Will Hamas stop the rockets? Will the hostages be released…. An unstable ceasefire, which quickly erupts into violence, will make it even more difficult to build the trust that is needed for peace."
The government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that it is trying to return all the hostages that are being held in Gaza, so the military pressure on Hamas must be increased.
Netanyahu has signaled that talks are underway, and some media outlets have reported that Egypt and Qatar are involved in the process.
However, Hamas has said that there will be no negotiations for the release of the hostages, "unless the aggression against our people is stopped, once and for all".
There are currently more than 120 hostages being held in Gaza.
On October 7, Hamas launched an attack on Israeli soil, killing 1,200 people and taking over 240 hostages - some of whom were exchanged in November.
Israel has since declared war on Hamas, vowing to destroy the group.
According to the Palestinian authorities, Israel's air and ground campaign in Gaza has resulted in over 18,700 casualties since the start of the war./REL
