Turkey's National Assembly was engulfed in intense tension on Sunday evening, during the final day of the state budget debate, when deputies from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) physically clashed, exchanging punches in the plenary hall.

The incident lasted about ten minutes and forced Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş to suspend the session, as security forces had difficulty removing the deputies involved in the fight.

Despite the chaos, Parliament then finally approved the Central Government Budget for 2026 with 320 votes in favor and 249 against. Meanwhile, the Accountability Act for 2024 was approved with 316 votes in favor and 247 against.

How the conflict in parliament started

According to reports, the clash began after a verbal argument between AK Party MP from Bursa, Mustafa Varank, and CHP parliamentary group deputy chairman Gökan Günaydın. From the podium, Varank addressed the opposition benches with provocative statements, also mentioning CHP chairman Özgür Özel, as well as his promises to farmers.

Günaydın's reaction was immediate and harsh. He accused the ruling party of using controversy for political gain and of systematically slandering CHP-run municipalities.

Tensions escalated further when the other deputy chairman of the CHP parliamentary group, Ali Mahir Başarır, stood up in protest. Verbal exchanges first turned into pushing and then into physical fights between deputies from both sides.

Many lawmakers gathered in the center of the chamber, while security guards and other lawmakers tried to separate the deputies involved in the fight. The clashes continued even during the adjournment of the session.

At the time of the incidents, CHP chairman Özgür Özel and Nationalist Movement Party chairman Devlet Bahçeli were also in the hall, but neither of them intervened directly to stop the clash.
