American intelligence reports continue to warn that Russian President Vladimir Putin has not given up on his goal of occupying all of Ukraine and expanding Russian influence into European territories that once belonged to the Soviet Union, including countries that are now members of NATO.
According to Reuters, which cites six sources informed on the matter, these assessments contradict statements by US President Donald Trump and his negotiators, who have claimed that the Kremlin aims to end the war that began with the invasion of Ukraine almost four years ago.
US intelligence reports, the latest of which was compiled in September, also refute Moscow's claims that Russia poses no threat to Europe. According to these assessments, the first countries at risk would be the Baltic states: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
The head of Ukrainian military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, states that Moscow is accelerating its strategic plans.
"According to the original plan, Russia was supposed to be ready for action in 2030. Now the deadlines have been shortened to 2027 ," he said, adding that the Kremlin sees itself as a power that survives only through the constant expansion of influence.
The revelations reported by Reuters were dismissed by Tulsi Gabbard, the US Director of National Intelligence, who reacted on the social network X. She accused what she called the "Deep State" and the media of spreading false information, emphasizing that US intelligence estimates that Russia does not have the capacity to invade and control even Ukraine, let alone Europe.
Meanwhile, another round of indirect talks between Ukraine and Russia has been held in Miami, brokered by the United States. In Europe, French President Emmanuel Macron has signaled a willingness to resume contacts with Vladimir Putin, reflecting growing concerns in some European capitals about an end to the war that would be damaging to Ukraine and Europe itself.
On the sidelines of the European Council, Macron declared that it would be "appropriate" to resume contacts with the Russian leader, while the Elysee Palace stressed that the prospect of a ceasefire and peace negotiations makes it necessary to restore dialogue.
