The far-right German party declares the EU "non-grata": the Union is a

The far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has declared the European Union a "failed project" in its current form, the "Associated Press" agency reports.

The Eurosceptic political party has adopted its platform for next June's European Parliament elections, in which it says the EU has "completely failed" in all important areas, including migration and climate policy, and has rejected the euro as its currency. .

The party, however, gave up the demand for Germany's exit from the EU. Instead, the AfD calls for the European Union to be re-established as a "federation of European nations", reports the Dpa agency.

According to the electoral program, the main tasks of the new federation should be the protection of external borders against migration, strategic autonomy in security policy and the preservation of "different identities" in Europe.

Recent polls show the AfD's support has risen to 19 to 22 percent, making it the second strongest party in Germany.

The program approved on Sunday in Magdeburg is more moderate towards the EU than the draft program of June, in which the AfD said it would seek an "orderly breakup of the EU".

Some AfD officials have previously expressed a desire for Germany to leave the EU entirely.

However, the new program says that the AfD supports the idea of a "European community of sovereign, democratic states".

The party has also finalized its list of 35 candidates for next year's European Parliament elections.

Maximilian Krah, a member of the EP since 2019, was elected last weekend as the main candidate of the AfD with 65.7 percent of the vote.

Leading members of the AfD spoke out on Sunday against cooperation with the country's main conservative opposition bloc, former chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

CDU leader Friedrich Merz previously said there would be no cooperation even at the local level between his Christian Democratic Union and the AfD, after his suggestion they could work together drew criticism from conservative colleagues.
