After Biden, Trump revokes Harris and Clinton's rights to know state

US President Donald Trump made good on his threat on Friday to revoke clearances for handling confidential and secret materials held by his predecessor Joe Biden and many other Democratic party figures.

Among the people who will no longer be able to be informed about cases that constitute state secrets are Joe Biden, his family members, former Vice President and opponent in last year's election Kamala Harris, as well as former Secretary of State, former first lady and his opponent in the 2016 presidential election Hillary Clinton.

The move also concerns former Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and former national security adviser Jake Sullivan.

In a memo to senior government officials, Trump emphasizes that confidential or secret information should no longer be shared with those to whom he denies the right.

As a rule - albeit an unwritten rule - former US presidents and senior officials responsible for national security matters retain secret clearances even after leaving their positions and generally have access to sensitive matters.

Trump announced this measure in early February, describing it as a retaliatory action because Joe Biden had denied him access to confidential and classified documents in 2021. This decision followed the attack by the tycoon's supporters on the federal Capitol.

Donald Trump also faced criminal charges for endangering national security by keeping dozens of classified documents, including military plans and nuclear weapons data, at his private residence after his first term ended, instead of returning them to the national archives as required. However, the cases against him were dismissed after he won the presidential election in November.

Beyond the Democratic field figures, Trump also includes a once prominent Republican congresswoman who became his internal party rival before being expelled — that is, of course, Liz Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney.

The move was perceived by many as vindictive and was characterized as revanchist by some in the press.
