After Poland, Russian drones violate Romanian airspace

A new incident involving the violation of the airspace of a NATO member state by a Russian drone has heightened tensions in the east of the Alliance. According to Romanian authorities, a Russian military drone entered Romanian airspace near the Chilia Veche area, on the border with Ukraine, prompting the immediate mobilization of air forces and the activation of civil alerts for the local population.

A Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jet took off quickly and detected the aerial object, which did not belong to any identified flight. After a brief pursuit in a sector of Black Sea airspace, the drone disappeared from radar, and is believed to have crashed in an uninhabited area. Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact location of the crash, and the remains of the object are still being searched for by rapid response units.

Due to the potential risk to civilians, a Ro-Alert system alert was issued for residents of the northern Tulcea region, near Romania's eastern border. The population was ordered to stay in safe areas, basements or away from windows, for at least 90 minutes, to avoid any risk from possible fragments that could fall from the sky.

Romania's Defense Ministry stressed that the drone did not fly over populated areas and did not cause material damage or casualties. However, the incident is considered a provocative act and an unacceptable violation of the airspace of a NATO member country, bringing to the fore the dangers of Russia's escalation of the war beyond Ukraine's borders.

NATO, which considers any attack on a member country as an attack on the entire Alliance, was immediately notified of the incident and remains on heightened alert in the Black Sea area. Diplomatic sources in Brussels confirm that the situation is being closely monitored and that Romania has submitted a preliminary report of the incident to NATO command structures.
