The US has proposed a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council calling for a temporary ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas.
According to the text read by the Reuters news agency, the document also opposes a major ground offensive that Israel is planning in Rafah in southern Gaza. Washington, so far, has not used the word ceasefire in any UN action regarding the Israel-Hamas war.
However, the draft echoes language that US President Joe Biden is said to have used last week in talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
" Under the current circumstances, a major ground offensive in Rafah would result in further damage to civilians and their continued displacement, including potentially to neighboring countries ," the resolution said, among other things.
Israel launched the war in Gaza after Hamas militants, who control the enclave, attacked Israel on October 7, killing more than 1,200 people and taking hundreds more hostage. Washington traditionally defends its ally, Israel, from UN actions. Since October 7, he has vetoed two Security Council resolutions.
However, it has twice abstained, allowing the Council to pass resolutions aimed at increasing aid to Gaza and calling for urgent and extended humanitarian pauses.
The resolutions of this body are not binding, but have political weight, as they reflect global views on the war. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has long called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. UN aid chief Martin Griffith warned last week that military operations in Rafah "could lead to massacres".
