The Iranian military claims to have shot down a second US warplane late Friday, the Islamic Republic's state media reported.
According to a statement issued by the Iranian military's public relations office, the American A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft, also known as the "Warthog", was intercepted by Iranian air defense systems near the Strait of Hormuz and crashed into the waters of the Persian Gulf.
"The enemy target was identified, targeted and successfully hit by our air defense systems. The plane fell into the sea, " the Iranian statement said.
CNN reached out to the United States Department of Defense for an official comment, but has not yet received a response.
The claim comes just hours after another US fighter jet, an F-15E Strike Eagle, was shot down over Iranian territory, according to Iranian media reports and US sources. The Pentagon has not yet confirmed the loss of another aircraft in the region, as tensions between the US and Iran have reached a new high in recent days.
