Following the scandal involving contaminated baby food, the European Union is tightening controls on imports of arachidonic acid oil, an ingredient originating in China.
Starting Thursday, every second shipment of arachidonic acid oil from China will be subject to testing for the presence of cereulide toxin, according to a decision published on Wednesday in the EU's Official Journal.
According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), cereulide toxin has led to recalls of baby food products in several countries around the world. Cereulide is a toxin produced by bacteria that can cause nausea, vomiting and sudden stomach pain from 30 minutes to six hours after consumption.
The announcement in the Official Gazette states that the contamination with this toxin is related to arachidonic acid oil from China, used during the production process.
EFSA has previously conducted a risk assessment and has set for the first time a safety guideline level for the permitted amount of cereulide in baby food.
In January, food companies Danone and Nestlé recalled several batches of their children's products from the market in Germany.
At the time, Nestlé stated that "it is important for us to say that to date no illnesses or symptoms have been confirmed related to the consumption of the affected products."
