
The head of the EU-Albania Parliamentary Committee, Manolis Kefalogiannis, and the Coordinator of the European People's Parties for Foreign Affairs, Michael Gahler, commenting on the arrest of the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, requested in a joint statement that the state of of the right.
They declared that they fully respect the independence of the Albanian judiciary, but remain vigilant to ensure that basic human rights are applied equally to all elected mayors, including those belonging to the opposition or ethnic minorities.
" The standards of the rule of law must be in accordance with the requirements of the EU membership process of the candidate countries, including Albania. The recent events regarding the detention of the elected mayor of Himara, who belongs to the opposition and the ethnic minority, highlight our concerns in this regard ," the statement said.
