Brazilian police announced today that they had arrested five members of a gang created to spy on politicians and senior justice officials.
The gang was founded by a retired colonel, according to a well-informed source. A document seized by police and seen by Reuters news agency says the gang was called "Comando C4" - or simply C4 for short - and advertised that it undertook "the hunt for communists, corrupt people and criminals" for a fee.
The document stated that the gang charged approximately 38,000 euros for attacks against senior judicial officials and 23,000 euros for attacks against senators. According to the same source, C4 members had weapons and explosives, while using prostitutes as "bait".
It is not clear whether senior officials were targeted by C4, but the investigation began when police were investigating the murder of a 56-year-old lawyer in Cuiaba, Mato Grosso state.
Roberto Zambieri was shot inside his car on the night of December 5, 2023.
