Macron to make official visit to Rome on June 3...
French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni appear to have put behind them the tension that began between them during the EU summit in Tirana.
During the summit, Meloni was not invited to take part in a joint call with Donald Trump. She told Italian journalists that she was blocked because of her refusal to send troops to Ukraine as part of a proposed "coalition of the willing."
Macron, who was in conversation with Sir Keir Starmer, Donald Tusk, the president of Poland, and Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, accused Ms Meloni of spreading disinformation.
But it seems that the two leaders have decided to "melt the ice". According to Italian media, on Tuesday, June 3, an important meeting will take place in Rome between the Italian Prime Minister and the French President. The news is confirmed by sources at Palazzo Chigi, who indicate that the main topics of the bilateral, European and international agenda will be at the center of the talks, reports "Corriere Della Sera".
The meeting comes after a period of repeated tensions between the two leaders, which culminated especially over positions on Ukraine, the migration crisis, and social values in official European documents.
On June 14, 2024, at the G7 summit in Puglia, Macron requested that abortion rights be included in the final declaration – a request that was rejected, and the meeting with Meloni was described as "cold".
On October 17, 2024, at the Brussels European Council, France opposed Italy's project to establish migration centers in Albania and, together with Spain and Germany, boycotted a meeting called by Meloni to discuss the crisis.
But the most direct clash occurred on May 16, 2025 in Tirana and made quite a stir in foreign media.
The June 3 meeting is seen as an attempt to resume dialogue and avoid deepening divisions between two key EU states, at a critical moment for European stability and the stance towards the war in Ukraine. /Pamphlet
