After failing to find a new chief, NATO members are expected to agree on Tuesday to extend Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg's term for another year, according to four diplomats cited by Reuters.
Most NATO leaders agreed with US President Joe Biden's view that Stoltenberg should remain secretary general of the alliance under current circumstances.
A decision on Stoltenberg's future was pending ahead of a major NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania on July 11 and 12, one of the alliance's most important gatherings amid the war in Ukraine.
Despite the great importance of the role, the selection is very non-transparent and is carried out through consultation. These consultations continue until all NATO members reach a consensus.
It is noted that none of Stoltenberg's alleged replacements could win the overwhelming support of the 31 member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Stoltenberg has been the secretary general of NATO since 2014. His term was due to end in 2022, but due to the conflict in Ukraine, it was extended until the end of September 2023.
