Argentina could bring back flags and messages for the Falkland Islands (the Malvinas, as they are known in Argentina) in its celebrations if it triumphs in the 2026 World Cup final against Spain.

According to recent reports, the Argentine team has received the green light from the FIFA task force at the White House to display this symbolism if it wins the most important trophy in world football.

The head of this structure, Andrew Giuliani, has stated that Argentine footballers should have the right to express their beliefs and that such a message should not be banned.

" Players should be free to express their opinions. Such a message should not be hindered ," Giuliani said.

The issue is linked to one of Argentina's most sensitive national conflicts. The Falkland Islands, called Malvinas by Buenos Aires, have been at the center of a territorial dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom for decades. The 1982 war between the two countries over control of the islands remains a historical and emotional wound for the Argentine people.

However, this decision has caused controversy, as it goes against FIFA's traditional stance of keeping politics out of football.

FIFA and international football organizations' regulations stipulate that stadiums and sporting events should not be used for political, religious or ideological messages.

One of the most recent cases that brought the debate back to life was that of Spanish footballers after their triumph at EURO 2024. Rodri and Alvaro Morata were each given a one-match suspension by UEFA after they chanted the slogan “ Gibraltar is Spanish ” during their celebrations of the European title in Madrid. UEFA considered this to be the use of a sporting event to make an unsporting statement.

This episode raised questions about how political messages are handled in football and whether there is a single standard for all national teams.

If Argentina defeats Spain in the grand final in New Jersey, the title celebration ceremony could also be associated with the symbolism of the Falklands, an issue that has special national importance for Argentines.

But this decision is expected to open a broader debate in modern football: where the expression of national identity ends and where the use of sport as a platform for political messages begins.
