Pope Francis condemns Koran burning in Sweden: Freedom of speech should never be

Pope Francis has said that the burning of a copy of the Muslim holy book, the Koran, has angered and disgusted him. He added that he condemns and refuses to allow such an act as a form of expression of freedom of speech.

" Every book that is considered sacred must be respected in order to respect those who believe in it ," said Pope Francis in an interview given to the United Arab Emirates newspaper, Al Ittihad, published on July 3. " I feel angry and disgusted by these actions ".

" Freedom of speech should never be used as a tool to disparage others, and allowing this is rejected and condemned ," he added.

A man tore up and burned a copy of the Koran in Sweden's capital, Stockholm, last week. This action brought a lot of criticism from several countries, including Turkey, whose support Sweden must win for membership in the NATO military alliance.

Police in the Swedish capital allowed the demonstration to continue, despite similar actions being banned in February.

Swedish courts had ruled that the police had no right to refuse permission to burn the Koran.

The incident sparked protests in Iran and Iraq. Official Tehran has postponed the decision on the appointment of a new ambassador to Sweden.

On July 2, an Islamic organization of 57 countries said that collective measures are needed to prevent acts of desecration of the Koran and that international law should be used to stop religious hatred./ REL
