Floods in Spain, death toll rises to 217; hope for survivors fades

At least 217 people have died in the floods in Spain, and their number is expected to rise even more as the hours pass, while hopes of finding survivors are fading.

Today, King Felipe, Queen Letizia and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez are expected to visit southeastern Spain, which has been hit by the worst natural disaster in the country's recent history.

Yesterday Sanchez announced the deployment of an additional 5,000 troops to help search for missing people, bringing the total to 7,500.

This is "the largest deployment of the armed forces that has ever happened in Spain in peacetime", said Sanchez.

The army is joined by 5,000 policemen and gendarmes who went to support the other 5,000 colleagues on the ground. These reinforcements are eagerly awaited in some communities where, even a few days after the tragedy, the situation is still described as chaotic.

According to the Spanish Meteorological Service (AEMET), the rainfall in the country was equal to that recorded "in a year" within a few hours.
