Train collision in Spain

A serious rail accident has rocked southern Spain, where at least 39 people have died after two trains collided near Adamuz, in the Andalusia region.

Footage recorded immediately after the tragedy shows rescue teams operating at the scene, while passengers wait to be pulled out of the broken windows of the overturned carriages. Authorities warn that the death toll could rise.

The Spanish Civil Guard published images of rescue operations on social media, showing rubble near a tunnel. According to the latest information, efforts to extract people trapped in one of the two trains are continuing, while efforts to extract the other have ended.

Meanwhile, Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente warned that "the death toll is not final," while Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that he was heading to the scene of the accident to closely monitor the situation.

The private company Iryo, owner of the train that derailed and collided with another train moving in the opposite direction, announced that the last technical inspection was carried out on Thursday.

How did the tragedy happen?

A high-speed train operated by the private company Iryo derailed and collided with a train operated by the state-owned Renfe company on Sunday evening. According to Minister Puente, the collision was so severe that the first two carriages of the second train also overturned.

The accident happened near Adamuz, in the province of Cordoba, about 360 kilometers south of Madrid, at around 7:45 p.m. local time.

According to the newspaper El Pais, the 27-year-old driver of the Renfe train, which was traveling from Madrid to Huelva, was among the victims. Around 400 people, mainly Spanish citizens, were traveling on both trains.

"It was like an earthquake,"  says one passenger

A passenger on one of the trains involved in the accident said the collision "felt like an earthquake."

"I was in the first carriage. At one point I felt like an earthquake was happening and then the train derailed,"  Salvador Jiménez told public broadcaster RTVE.

Another passenger, traveling to Madrid, told Canal Sur television: "People were screaming, asking for doctors."

A very strange accident

The Renfe train was traveling at around 200 km/h at the time of the collision, while the speed of the train that derailed has not yet been announced.

The causes of the accident remain unclear, Minister Puente said during a press conference from Atocha station in Madrid, describing the event as "very strange."

"How is it possible for such an accident to occur on a straight, renovated railway segment, with an almost new train?"  he said, adding that a special commission will investigate the causes.

"This is a night of deep pain for our country,"  Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wrote on the X platform, announcing that he had canceled all commitments to closely follow the rescue operations.

Minister Puente explained that most of the victims and injured were in the first two carriages of the Renfe train, which was hit by the other train. There were 37 people in the first carriage and 16 in the second.

Cordoba's fire chief, Paco Carmona, told TVE that passengers on the Iryo train were evacuated within a few hours, while the Renfe train carriages suffered severe damage.

"There are still people trapped. The operation is focusing on getting people out of very tight spaces. We need to remove bodies to reach those who might still be alive. It is an extremely difficult task,"  Carmona said.
