Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced an arms embargo and a partial import ban due to Israel's wartime behavior in Gaza, sparking an angry debate that culminated in the withdrawal of Madrid's envoy from Tel Aviv.
In a televised speech, Sanchez said the sanctions and other measures against Israel were intended to " stop the genocide in Gaza, prosecute its perpetrators and support the Palestinian population . "
In addition to an embargo on defense trade with Israel, Sanchez said Spain would also ban the entry of those participating in what he called a "genocide" against Palestinians, ban ships and planes carrying weapons destined for Israel from docking at Spanish ports or entering its airspace, and ban the import of goods from settlements in the West Bank.

The wide-ranging measures were condemned by Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, who announced shortly before Sanchez's speech that he would impose sanctions on two Spanish ministers, accusing the Spanish government of advancing anti-Semitic policies.
“The Spanish government is leading a hostile and anti-Israeli line, characterized by wild and hate-filled rhetoric ,” Sa’ar said, accusing the Sanchez administration of trying to “distract attention from serious corruption scandals” with its anti-Israel stance.
