President Donald Trump remains well below his low approval rating, as two new polls find widespread opposition to using the National Guard against crime in American cities.
Trump's approval rating is 44% in the CBS News/YouGov poll and 43% in the NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll. The CNN poll, which averages polls conducted from mid-August to early September, shows Trump's approval rating at 43% approving and 55% disapproving, similar to what it has held all summer.
In the CBS poll, nearly six in 10 Americans say they oppose Trump deploying the National Guard to Washington, D.C. (57% oppose) or other cities (58%). Slightly more (61%) say they would oppose Trump deploying National Guard troops to their local city or area. Americans are broadly divided on whether using the Guard to fight crime actually reduces crime (49% say yes, 51% say no), and only 36% say deploying the National Guard to cities makes them feel personally safer.
More see Trump's deployment of the National Guard as a purely political move (45%) than as an action designed to reduce crime (33%), with another 22% saying Trump is motivated by both political reasons and a goal to reduce crime.
The poll reveals broad partisan divides on all of these questions, with independents generally opposed and far more likely to see political motivation in Trump's actions (51%) than an effort to reduce crime (28%).
The NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll was conducted online from Aug. 13 to Sept. 1 with 30,196 adults nationwide and has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 1.9 percentage points. The CBS News/YouGov poll was conducted online from Sept. 3 to 5 with 2,385 adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 points.
