Ahead of his meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, Donald Trump joined a virtual meeting with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The German chancellor said the European side presented the US president with five principles on which they expect Trump to reach an agreement with Putin.
The EU's five conditions:
1-Ukraine should be at the negotiating table for any future meeting with Putin;
2-A ceasefire should be the first step, before the start of any negotiations;
3-Recognition of territory occupied by Russia is not on the table;
4-Ukrainian forces should be free to defend the sovereignty of their country, with European support;
5-Broader negotiations should be part of a "transatlantic strategy... based on supporting Ukraine and exerting pressure on Russia."
These are the 5 conditions that European leaders presented to President Donald Trump today during the virtual summit, which was also attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. At the joint press conference held in Berlin, between Mertz and Zelensky, it was said that the conversation with Trump was positive and hopeful.
However, none of them said that Trump had given them assurances that these conditions would be part of that meeting with Putin. Both Zelensky and EU leaders will have to wait for the outcome of Friday's meeting to see the effects of today's summit./ Pamphlet
