Part of the Mexican drug cartel, 'El Chapo's' wife is released from prison

Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, has been released from prison in America.

Coronel was sentenced to three years in prison in November 2021 after pleading guilty to drug trafficking and money laundering charges related to her husband's narcotics empire.

" For reasons of privacy, safety and security, we do not elaborate on specific release plans ," a spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons told CNN.

During her sentencing, Coronel, a dual US-Mexican citizen, expressed deep regret for her involvement with Guzman and the Sinaloa cartel and the damage she may have caused, foreign media reported.

Guzman, who twice escaped from prison in Mexico, is serving a life sentence at Colorado's Supermax prison after being convicted in 2019 of involvement in a criminal enterprise, drug trafficking and firearms charges.
