The escape of Danelo Cavalcante, the convict who spectacularly escaped from a Pennsylvania prison, just a week after he began his life sentence for murder, has lasted two weeks.
The sensational event raised the American authorities "on their feet" who organized a massive operation to capture the convict.
"Danelo Cavalcante, 34, was arrested in a wooded area within the security perimeter set up by the police," a source within the investigative team told the BBC.
The Brazilian escaped from prison by climbing the prison wall. The police deployed more than 500 police officers to track him down. The 34-year-old was sentenced last month to life in prison for murdering his ex-girlfriend in front of her two young children in April 2021. Local media footage echoed footage of Cavalcante seen crawling around the the wall with feet and hands.
Local media footage shows Cavalcante in handcuffs, wearing a dirty Philadelphia Eagles sweatshirt, being escorted into a black armored police van.
His capture "brings an end to the nightmare of the past two weeks," Chester County police said in a press release thanking those involved in the search.
They said prison officials had made "several immediate changes to strengthen security at the prison," including hiring new security contractors.
His escape method was the same used by another prisoner, Igor Bolte, in May of the same year.
Chester County residents were anxious until today when they saw footage of his capture on local television.
The police had warned them that the escaped murderer had entered a house in the area and fled with a .22 caliber rifle, while the owner of the house fired several shots in his direction.
"If you see him do not approach him, contact the authorities as he is considered very dangerous," Chester District Attorney Deb Ryan said.
