Former United States Treasury Secretary Larry Summers will resign from his position as a professor at Harvard University at the end of the academic year, according to the New York Times.
The decision comes after his name was included in documents recently released by the US government regarding the case of financier Jeffrey Epstein, convicted of sex crimes.
Harvard spokesman Jason Newton confirmed that, "as part of the ongoing review of recently released government documents," the university's former president accepted Summers' resignation from his academic position.
The documents include personal communications between Summers and Epstein, but do not show that the former US official committed any legal violations.
Summers served as Treasury Secretary during Bill Clinton's presidency and then headed Harvard University in the early 2000s. In November, he announced he would retire from public life, although he had initially planned to retain his position at the university.
He also resigned from the board of directors of OpenAI, the company that develops the ChatGPT artificial intelligence platform.
In a previous statement, Summers said he was "deeply ashamed" of his ties to Epstein and would step back from some engagements to focus on his family.
