US-Iran talks, Witkoff reveals Trump's condition for Tehran: Behave
Steve Witkoff

The Trump administration is demanding that Iran agree to any deal on its nuclear program remain in place indefinitely, White House special envoy Steve Witkoff said in a private conversation, according to three sources cited by the website Axios.

"We are starting with the Iranians on the condition that there is no sunset clause. Whether we reach a deal or not, our condition is: you have to behave properly for the rest of your life," Witkoff said at a donors' meeting in Washington, according to sources.

At the same time, Witkoff stressed that negotiations between the US and Iran are currently focused on nuclear issues, but if a deal is reached, the Trump administration would like to hold new talks on Iran's missile program and its support for armed groups in the Middle East.

At this point, the US would like to include other countries in the region in the talks, Trump's special envoy said.

He further emphasized that during talks on Iran's nuclear program, the two main issues are Tehran's ability to enrich uranium and the fate of existing reserves of enriched uranium.

Witkoff's comments came two days before tomorrow's meeting in Geneva between the US delegation and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Donald Trump and other critics of the 2015 agreement between the US and Iran on its nuclear program consider its expiration as one of the main obstacles.

Under the 2015 agreement, which Donald Trump canceled, most restrictions on Iran's nuclear program would gradually expire over a period of 8 to 25 years after the agreement was signed.

Removing these conditions for ending restrictions would strengthen a potential deal and make it easier for the US president to present it domestically as a new and improved agreement far better than the one reached by the Obama administration in 2015.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in an interview with CBS last weekend that Iran could sign a "better" deal that would ensure its nuclear program "remains peaceful forever."
