Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss, who takes a hard line against China, has lobbied Beijing's interests in the UK government to "accelerate the sale" of defense equipment to China and prevent a British company from lose millions in profits.
After "Politico" saw some documents related to Truss's private correspondence, the media concluded that Truss cooperated with China.
In a letter dated August 15, 2023 to Business and Trade Minister Kemi Badenoch, Truss asked her to help a British defense equipment manufacturer sell defense products to China.
British authorities have blocked the supply of demining equipment to China by Richmond Defense Systems, based in Norfolk, southeast England.
Experts in London believe that China could use this war material in any attack against Taiwan.
Liz Truss did not hesitate, as Politico notes, to lay out the company's arguments in a personal address to Badenoch, whom she named as a cabinet member during her brief term as prime minister from September 6 to October 25, 2022.
"Dear Kammy! I am writing to you on behalf of my area, whose application for a license to supply goods to China was first submitted on 01/03/2023… I would be grateful if you could expedite the receipt of the license,” the letter said. .
As Truss pointed out, banning the British company from selling military equipment to China would mean losing millions in future sales.
Richmond Defense Systems claims that if no license is granted, the Chinese will simply set up their own production line and manufacture the war equipment themselves.
