A giant portrait of 5-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab was unveiled on a beach in the Spanish city of Barcelona on Thursday, two years after she was killed by Israeli forces, with her mother appealing for international attention to the plight of Gaza's children.

Hind's last agonizing pleas for help while trapped in a car under Israeli fire in Gaza are recounted in the film "The Voice of Hind Rajab," which won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival last year and was nominated for an Oscar.

During Israel's genocidal offensive, Hind was trapped in her car for hours, begging Palestinian doctors via mobile phone to send help, while her aunt, uncle and three cousins were already dead.

When an ambulance arrived, contact with the girl and the rescue teams themselves was lost. Twelve days later, the bodies of the girl, her relatives, and two ambulance workers were recovered from the area.

In Barcelona, several hundred people held aloft a 55-meter-long raincoat with Rajab's face next to a large Palestinian flag and the message "Free the Children of Gaza."

"The children of Gaza are not asking for mercy. They are asking for their right to live, to sleep without fear, to play without bombs, to grow up, just to grow up," said Hindi's mother, Wesam Hamada, 29, as she watched her portrait being raised.

"Hind Rajab's voice didn't stay in the car; it traveled across borders," said Jordanian-Canadian actress Saja Kilani, who played a Palestinian Red Crescent first responder in the film and participated in the beach protest.

Asked this week about the deaths of Hindi and her relatives, the Israeli military said the incident remained under review and declined to comment further.

The United Nations has said the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains "dire" three months after a ceasefire following Israel's two-year military campaign that devastated the territory. Children are among the worst affected by a lack of shelter, food and basic services, including health care, aid officials say.

Israel has killed more than 70,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, during two years of attacks.

In Spain, there was considerable outrage over the Israeli military's ruthless actions in the Gaza Strip. Last August, a privately organized flotilla of aid supplies set off from Barcelona for Gaza.

The flotilla was stopped by the Israeli military shortly before reaching its destination.
