Donald Trump has an idea that he believes could be enthusiastically received by both Democrats and Republicans: Senator Ted Cruz of Texas to be one of the Supreme Court justices.
At a White House event, the president praised Cruz as a "brilliant legal mind" and claimed he would get "100 percent of the vote" in the Senate.
"Democrats and Republicans will vote for him because they want to get rid of him at all costs," Trump said.
Cruz was in the audience when Trump made the proposal. The president pointed to the senator and called him a "great guy."
But Cruz himself has no intention of becoming a judge. The Republican senator made his opinion on Trump's nomination clear on the "Ruthless" podcast.
"My answer is not simply no," the 55-year-old said. He added that it was not the first time Trump had nominated him for the Supreme Court. During Trump's first term, the president had spoken to him about all three judicial vacancies.
“We had very serious discussions, and I said no to all three of them early on,” Cruz said. The discussion was particularly intense when Antonin Scalia’s seat became vacant in 2016.
“I knew Justice Scalia and admired him,” Cruz explained, adding, “the opportunity to succeed him is breathtaking.”
In fact, Cruz possesses considerable legal expertise. From 1996 to 1997, he worked as a law clerk to then-Chief Justice William Rehnquist. Later, as Attorney General of Texas, he argued several cases before the Supreme Court. According to a report by ABC News, Cruz even commissioned an oil painting depicting him during a court hearing.
However, Cruz strongly rejected Trump's offer.
The reason: a Supreme Court judge must stay away from everyday politics.
"A principled federal judge stays out of political controversy and debate," Cruz said, adding, "I want to be the center of attention."
