US President Donald Trump has spoken about the possibility of China intervening militarily in Taiwan.
Asked whether the US attack on Venezuela set a precedent that Beijing might want to exploit, Trump replied: "They consider Taiwan part of China and it's up to them what they do."
Trump added that he would be very unhappy if China took military action in Taiwan. He stressed that China could not do so under his presidency. Trump left the possibility of military intervention open only after his departure.
"But I told him I would be very unhappy if he did that and I don't think he will. I hope he doesn't. He may take military action once we have another president in the White House, but I don't think he will do that with me as president," Trump added.
Regarding the leadership of Venezuela, Trump said that the US will lead it for more than a year.
Saturday's operation in Caracas has been described as a violation of international law, but when asked by the New York Times, Trump said: " I don't need international law."
Asked if there were any limits to his powers on the world stage, Trump said : "Yes, there is one. My morals, my mind."
