United States President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that US involvement in Venezuela could last for years, without giving a precise timeline for when it would end. Trump made the comments in an interview with the New York Times, days after the US military operation that led to the arrest of former President Nicolás Maduro and changed the political balance in Venezuela.
Trump said that “only time will tell” how long the US surveillance of Venezuela will last, and that he envisions a period much longer than a few months or a year. He added that his administration has plans to rebuild Venezuela in a profitable way, including using and extracting the country’s oil, seen as one of its greatest natural resources.
Trump said the United States is doing well with Venezuela's interim government, led by Delcy Rodríguez, a former vice president and Maduro ally, which is overseeing the political transition. He did not elaborate on whether or when new elections would be held in Venezuela to replace the current interim government.
This stance underscores Washington's goal to maintain political and economic influence in Venezuela, including control of oil supplies and sales. According to media reports, the US is considering refining and selling up to 50 million barrels of Venezuelan oil as part of its long-term strategy.
