French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday that France will vote against the trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur bloc, a day before the final vote by member states.
Macron explained that the French position is based on the unanimous rejection of the agreement by the French parliament, after more than 25 years of negotiations and intense discussions on its impact on the agricultural sector.
The decision came as farmers took to the streets of Paris in large numbers to protest both the EU-Mercosur agreement and the French government's agricultural policy. Protesters filled the city centre with tractors, blocking roads and voicing their concerns about foreign competition and the impact of the deal on local agriculture.
About 20 tractors reached the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, while other groups blocked the main axes of Paris. Police maintained a calm and coordinated stance to avoid incidents, while the president of the French Parliament, Yael Brown-Pivet, is expected to meet with representatives of agricultural unions to discuss their concerns and the possible consequences of the agreement.
Analysts point out that this French rejection could affect the finalization of the EU-Mercosur agreement, casting doubt on its approval by member states and reopening discussions on its impact on the European market and the local agricultural sector.
