The administration of US President Donald Trump is seriously considering a plan to offer direct payments to Greenlanders, with the aim of convincing them to secede from Denmark and join the United States, Reuters reported, citing US officials, in an exclusive report that sheds light on Washington's strategy for the strategic Arctic island.
According to sources, the Trump administration is discussing lump sum payments that could range from $10,000 to $100,000 per person. The idea is being considered as a “peaceful” alternative to what Trump has been openly saying for years, the purchase of Greenland. White House officials have acknowledged that this approach is being discussed alongside other options, including diplomatic pressure and stronger strategic scenarios.
The proposal aims to provide a practical explanation of how the US could de facto “buy” Greenland, a territory with about 57,000 inhabitants, despite clear objections from Denmark and the local authorities in Nuuk, which have publicly stated that Greenland is not for sale. However, the idea of direct payments is seen by many analysts as offensive to a society that has been debating independence and economic dependence on Copenhagen for years.
Reuters reports that another scenario being discussed is reaching a Compact of Free Association (COFA)-style agreement, a model the US has used only with a few small Pacific island states. Such an agreement would give Washington strategic and military control without formally annexing the territory.
Despite critical reactions from European leaders and the rejection of Danish authorities, the Trump administration seems determined to keep the Greenland issue on the table. For Washington, the island's strategic interest, geopolitical position and potential natural resources remain key reasons to explore every option, including direct payments to citizens.
